Well, the Republinazis succeeded in keeping Terry Werner from being re-elected. They got in two of their own -- the most right-wing of the candidates. Eschliman is so anti-abortion she doesn't even think it should be allowed for rape & incest. So she'll do her best to keep Planned Parenthood from getting any money. At least Dan Marvin made it in. I know Jonathan Cook is a Democrat, and I'm pretty sure Annette McElroy is, so at least it's 3 to 4. We can probably expect the majority to kowtow to big business, because they'll give them anything they want to get them here, screw the little people and small businesses. That Hammons a-hole was probably just waiting for this -- now he knows he can pretty much do whatever he wants, and the Repukes will let him. I wouldn't be surprised if they decide to let him have that block downtown he wants, and screw the people that live there and have businesses.

InterLinc: City Council Members -- Terry Werner This is the guy that the Repukes are trying so hard to paint as a radical.... I guess all that crap about "compassionate conservatism" is as big a joke as their "fiscal conservatism".... this guy does more for the ordinary people of this city than anyone else on the council. All the Repukes are all about their achievements in the business world.......

We have this myth that America is a <classless> society... but that's crap. At least in Republican eyes, a person's worth is measured by how much money they have. If you're poor in this country, it must be because you're lazy and no-good. They don't see how the system oppresses the lower classes. Minimum wage is a joke. If you work full-time, you should be able to support yourself and your family. So many employers whine about how they can't afford a rise in the minimum wage, they don't want to provide benefits, all the while, the management is living high on the hog. Look at Wal-Mart, encouraging their employees to apply for public assistance, because they don't want to pay people an adequate wage. I'm sure the executive officers of that company get their bonuses on top of their huge salaries..

Some Republican stooge was on CSPAN the other night, advocating that we let more immigrants in to take the jobs Americans "don't want." What a load of crap. How about paying people what their work is worth, instead of exploiting desperate people from other countries? How about we start giving tax cuts to companies who don't outsource American jobs? How is the Secretary for the Dep't of the Fatherland (err, Homeland Security) qualified to suggest economic policies, anyway? Oh, that's right. He's a Republican. They know everything, because they get it directly from God.

Had a semi-eventful weekend...

Jen & I watched The Girl Next Door Friday night. It was better than I expected. Two weird things about it -- the kid who plays Adam on Joan of Arcadia is one of the main character's sidekicks -- he plays a porn-obessed amateur filmmaker with a foul mouth. Totally different than the relatively squeaky-clean character he plays on tv... and Timothy Olyphant pretty much plays the exact same character he played in Go--a ruthless, self-absorbed a-hole who's only out for himself.

Saturday afternoon Jen & I went downtown to the Ethnic Festival. It didn't seem like there were quite as many people this year... but it was kind of chilly. The kind of day where the sun is warm enough, but the wind is cold. It's been that way all week -- more like March than May. Oh well, it'll be hot soon enough. Anyway, we looked at the booths, then decided what to eat. I had Sudanese -- a lamb kebab, some Arabic bread, and salad. It was ok, but not as good as the Iranian & Ethiopian we had last year. Jen had a gyro. I would've too, but I wanted to have something I can't go to a restaurant here and eat anytime... we were going to buy some Turkish Delight from the Turkish coffee shop's booth, but we decided it would be cheaper just to go to their store later and get it. They have this inconvenient ticket system at the festival, where you have to buy a set amount of tickets (9 for $5)... but if what you buy doesn't add up to a multiple of 9, you're stuck with extras tickets...

After that, we were going to go to Homer's, but we ended up going to A Novel Idea. Jen has been looking for Joan Aiken books, most of which seem to be out of print. She found one there. I found a nice hardcover collection of Ramsey Campbell short stories for $10. Went into Ozone, they had some cute clothes, but not in my size... We decided to skip Homer's, since neither of us has much spare $ right now. Checked out Black Market on the way back to the car, they also had some cute stuff, but nothing in plus sizes.... Are there really that many skinny women? Maybe that's why they sold their clothes, they aren't skinny anymore. I don't know. It's depressing. I used to be able to shop in the girl's section at Target........

Yesterday I went up to Omaha to visit Nick. Basically just sat around the dayroom and watched The Incredibles. At least he's only going to be there 2 more months... as long he keeps up with his program. Then, if Pastor Bud has room, they'll let him come down here so he can get a job, and we can get a start on finding a place. He's talking house, but I don't know how we'll afford it... I just don't want to live in some ghettoey dump surrounded by dopers... I don't want to have to worry every minute I'm not at home that some crackhead tweeker is going to break in and steal everything. I'd also like to not live too near any really busy streets, so I don't have to constantly fear for my kitties' lives... when we lived at 16th & E, Mojo was always wandering around in the street... he's already been hit by a car once, and I think he has a bit of brain damage... I don't think he has any short-term memory at all. Poor baby. He's my SpEd kitten. If he were a human child, he'd have to ride the short bus to school.

Oh yeah, I wrote a letter to the editor of the paper, and they printed it...

Define democracy

Apparently the Republicans won't be satisfied until every seat on the City Council is filled by one of them, as their recent vicious and spurious attacks on Terry Werner demonstrate. They already have control of every level of government, but apparently that's not enough. It seems in their eyes, no one who doesn't subscribe to their world view deserves any voice or representation in our government. That's not democracy, that's totalitarianism.Perhaps Bush's joke about how much easier running this country would be if it were a dictatorship wasn't a joke. I would like a Republican to define for me what they mean by "democracy," since they like to throw the word around so much. Oh yes, while they're at it, could they please define "fiscal conservatism" as well?
