Lincoln police uncovered components of a methamphetamine lab they said could be the first-ever such lab found in the city. Investigators found the lab components Tuesday in boxes inside a storage facility at 2500 Kimco Court, which is near State Fair Park, west of North 27th Street.
They also found evidence the lab's users might have used — or planned to use — red phosphorous to make the drug.
If true, it would mark the first time authorities uncovered a red phosphorous meth lab in Lincoln, police said. Such labs are common in the western and southwest United States and in the large-scale "super labs" in Mexico.
Red phosphorous produces purer meth, police said. Also, because of the chemicals used, its production process is more volatile.
Officers executed the search warrant following the arrest earlier Tuesday of Joseph Kiser, 29, on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.
Kiser, a transient, was taken into custody near 25th and Randolph streets around 8:15 p.m. He was charged Wednesday with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.
Kiser, who was being held in Lancaster County Jail, was scheduled to be arraigned today.
He reportedly had 28.5 grams of meth with him at the time of his arrest. Police said the suspected meth was not produced in the confiscated lab.
Jim Sydik, a chemist and investigator with the department's narcotics unit, said Wednesday red phosphorous can produce a poisonous gas when mixed with other chemicals used to make meth.
The phosphorous comes in a powder form and can be bought at chemical supply stores, he said. The substance can also be gleaned from the striker plates found on match books and road flares.
Statewide, about 1 percent of meth labs use red phosphorous, Sydik said.
"We knew it would happen," he said of Lincoln's possibly first red phosphorous lab. "It always makes us more cautious."
He said the confiscated chemicals would require additional testing to determine if the phosphorus was in fact present.
In addition to chemicals seized from the storage facility, police also confiscated a number of how-to books on making meth, Sydik said.
